This spectacular ride takes in the tropical South Indian states of Maharashtra and Goa riding down the famed Konkani coast with a few twists inland to take in the remote and dramatic hinterland of Maharashtra and on to the legendary beaches of Goa. We pedal on idyllic back country roads overnighting at places of special historical and scenic interest with plenty of time to take in the temples, beaches, historical cities and everything else that make Mountain Bike Kerala’s Mumbai-Goa ride so special.

The Konkan Coast: Mumbai-Goa

Of all the places in India that we have ridden few stir the imagination as much as Mumbai and Goa. From the grandeur of Mumbai’s Gateway Of India it’s just a short ferry ride across the harbour to the Konkani Coast and the spectacular cliffs, rugged mountains, inland plateaus, rivers and the endless paradise beaches that hug the coastline. Throw in charming temple towns, colourful harbours a timeless slow pace of life and the famed tropical wonderland of Goa and we have the perfect backdrop for a challenging cycle tour that takes in the best of the sights and the scenery and allows plenty of time to relax and soak up India’s delights.

Day 1: Arrival in Mumbai. Arrive in Mumbai and transfer to a hotel near the famed Gateway of India. Rest up and set up your bike before exploring this energetic cosmopolitan metropolis with hidden gems and secrets. End the day with a meal at a famous Parsi restaurant.

Day 2: Mumbai to Kolad. A gem of a first-day ride starts with an early morning cruise south across the Arabian Sea to Mandawa, where we begin our ride on idyllic backroads to our riverside retreat near Kolad, situated on the banks of the Kundalika River.

Distance: 76km | Ride Time: 5 hours | Overnight: Kolad

Day 3: Kolad to Taloshi. We head deeper into the backcountry of Maharashtra through paddy fields and rustic countryside, climbing into the foothills of the Western Ghats. After a short guided tour of the majestic 11th Century Raigad Fort, we descend to our rural retreat in the secluded valley at Taloshi.

Day 4: Taloshi to Hariharieshwar. Another stunning day in the saddle as we head towards the coast, following the beautiful Savitri River. We’ll reach our luxury beachside resort near the charming temple town of Hariharieshwar. Time to break out the swimwear for a first dip in the Arabian Sea.

Distance: 85km | Ride Time: 6 hours | Overnight: Hariharieshwar

Day 5: Hariharieshwar to Dapoli. Secluded coves and deserted beaches are our constant companions on this delightful ride. We cross lazy rivers on ferries and quirky bridges, arriving in the compact yet lively town of Dapoli, known for its great Konkani cuisine and coconut palms that often make their way into the delicious local food.

Day 6: Dapoli to Guhagar. More rural backcountry riding along the coastline, with sublime views of the Konkani coast and its scenic hinterland. The route is a rollercoaster of short, sharp climbs followed by equally steep descents as we reach the stunning beach at the laid-back town of Guhagar. Watch out for Great Hornbill birds in the nearby coconut groves.

Day 7: Guhagar to Ratnagiri. We continue our southern adventure on undulating, empty roads, with a short detour to another atmospheric fort steeped in the history of the East India Company and the Maratha Empire. We roll on to Ratnagiri, a steep-sided town with bustling, colorful markets and a fascinating Burmese connection. In the evening, sample Ratnagiri’s nightlife and enjoy its outrageously good food.

Day 8: Ratnagiri to Devgad. We roll through the rolling countryside, passing lazy rivers, and making our way to Devgad—a sleepy coastal village that is part colorful fishing port, part coastal resort. Here, enjoy a beautiful beach and some killer Pau Bhaji.

Distance: 95km | Ride Time: 7 hours | Overnight: Devgad

Day 9: Devgad to Malvan. We ride to Malvan, a charming, laid-back town with long shores of silky white sand, clear waters, and golden sunsets. Explore this tranquil town from our superb beachside resort, with options for short fishing boat cruises or a refreshing dip in the sea.

Day 10: Malvan to Arambol. Another beautiful day in the saddle as we ride further south on near-deserted roads, crossing the Terekhol River into Goa. Goa’s laid-back charm is felt instantly, with quaint bars and restaurants tucked away in every corner. We pedal on to our knockout resort near the pristine river in the quiet side of Arambol. Time for a celebration night out!

Day 11: Arambol Rest Day. Take a full day to enjoy the charms of Arambol. Enjoy beautiful beach walks and unwind at beachside bars and restaurants when you need a break.

Day 12: Arambol to Panjim. A short but lively ride to Goa’s delightful capital, Panjim. This charming city feels like Lisbon dropped into the tropics, with its colonial Portuguese architecture and timeless bars and restaurants. Enjoy a walking tour of the city and soak in its laid-back atmosphere.

Day 13: Return Travel to Mumbai. Transfer to the airport for your return flight to Mumbai, or onward travel as per your plans.
